Requesting Interpretation or Live Captioning

Note
Once you're logged in, if you ever get stuck or don't know what to do, you can click on the "See the Documentation" button in the upper-left corner.

  1. Login to your DHHS account online at BYU.uSked.com.
  2. From your uSked Home screen, click on the button in the upper-left corner that says, "Create a New Service Request."

  3. Enter the name of the event/class (eg. "Political Science 101").
  4. Fill in the date field as well as the start and end times.
Leave the time zone set to "America/Denver Mountain Time".
  5. Click the "Next" button. A notice will show you that the request has been submitted.
**BE SURE TO COMPLETE THE REMAINING STEPS**
**Click on the tabs of the request to open them and enter the rest of the information.**
  6. Event Name and Details tab:
    1. In the "Details" field, indicate the Course ID and Section #
    2. In the "Scheduling Notes" section, let the scheduler know if this is a recurrent event (such as an ongoing class). If it is, indicate what days of the week it occurs. Additionally, please indicate if this is In-Person, Remote, or Blended and any additional details that are known at the time that will help the scheduler make the necessary arrangements.
  7. Service Date & Time tab:
    1. Verify that these are correct. If there is an error, you will need to cancel the request and submit a new one.
  8. Location tab:
    1. In the Room Number field, enter the room or the Zoom link (if the link is not yet known, enter TBD)
    2. From the dropdown menu, select the name of the building.
If the building is not available in the dropdown list, click on Create a New Location to add it. In the screen that loads, click on the dropdown menu to select the building.

Then click the button below that field that says "Copy the Currently Selected Default Location Into the Fields Below". Note If the location is not a building available in the dropdown, enter the information manually into the corresponding fields.

Click to save changes. A system notice will tell you the new location has been created for your use.

  9. Points of Contact tab:
    1. Do nothing unless this is a special event and the coordinator or providers may need to contact someone in charge for more information.
  10. Clients tab:
    1. Indicate if this event is open to the public and set the expected audience size (in most cases, you can leave the default settings of "No" and "Class")
    2. For "Group Member," be sure your name is selected. Please do not attempt to add additional group members even if you know someone else is taking the class. Each student needs to submit a separate request. If you know another student will be taking the same class and will be requesting services, please make a note of that in the "Scheduling Notes" section found in the "Event Name and Details" tab.
    3. From the Selected Service dropdown, select the service type you are requesting. In most cases, it will be either "Sign Language Interpretation" or "Live Captioning/Transcription." If you aren't sure, please select either one and then contact the Deaf and Hard of Hearing coordinator for clarification.
  11. Service Providers tab:
    1. Usually, you'll keep the default dress code as "Business Casual." If there are extenuating circumstances you may indicate something more appropriate. If so, please also explain that in the "Scheduling Notes" section found in the "Event Name and Details" tab.
    2. For "Preferred Gender," most of the time you'll keep this set on "Does Not Matter." If there are extenuating circumstances, you may request a specific gender. Note this is not meant as an opportunity to search for an eternal mate—extenuating circumstances only, please.
    3. Enter the number of service providers wanted. For most classes, keep the default of "2" unless the content is something with unusually minimal communication. (For example, activity classes or classes where much of the time is spent working alone or if the event is 45 minutes in length or less are usually cases in which 1 service provider is sufficient.)
  12. In the Preferred Service Providers tab:
    1. You may indicate preferences for the service providers you'd like to have fill this request. We cannot make any guarantees, but we do try to honor specific provider requests where possible.
  13. In the Do Not Send Service Providers tab:
    1. You may indicate service providers that you prefer to not fill this request. Currently, the system requires that information to be sent separately to maintain confidentiality. We anticipate you will be able to add it to the request in the future and know that the providers won't see that not.
Every effort will be made to honor this request.
  14. In the Files tab: you may upload any files that will be helpful in arranging providers or helpful to the providers in their work. This might include items such as a copy of the course schedule or syllabus, vocabulary lists, song lyrics, reference materials, and so forth.
  15. Click on the button "Save Changes and Submit as Pending Confirmation" to finalize your request.
  16. You will be able to monitor the status of your request by opening it from your uSked dashboard.
